Heisenberg, Werner

Heisenberg, Werner
(1901– 76)
   Scientist.
Heisenberg was born in Würtzburg, Germany. He was educated at the University of Munich and he taught at Göttingen and Leipzig. During the Second World War, he directed the German atomic bomb project. Today, however, he is remembered for his ‘uncertainty principle’. He argued that at an atomic level, the uncertainty of our knowledge of the values of variables (such momentum, energy or position) is always greater than Planck’s constant of action. Thus we cannot know both the place and the speed of a particle. This theory has been seized upon by theologians and clergy as providing an escape from the closed cause-and-effect picture of the universe offered by traditional science.
